We just wrapped up a dual Velux skylight install on a Dunwoody home, and this one is a good example of how much the details matter when you're cutting into a roof.

A lot of homeowners think skylights are risky because of leaks. And honestly, that reputation comes from poor installs - not from skylights themselves. When the flashing is done correctly and the unit is seated properly against the roof deck, you get natural light without the water problems. That's the whole point.

Velux is our go-to for a reason. The build quality is there, and their integrated flashing systems are designed to work with standard shingle roofs. You can see how cleanly the step flashing and sill plate sit against the surrounding shingles - that tight fit is what keeps water moving off and away from the opening, not into it.

We treat every skylight job like a roofing job, because that's exactly what it is. The glass unit is only part of the equation. The framing, the flashing, and the shingle integration around it all have to be right. Cut a corner on any one of those, and you'll be chasing a leak sooner or later.

If you've been thinking about adding a skylight - or replacing an old one that's giving you trouble - we're happy to walk you through what's actually involved and whether your roof is a good candidate for it.
